2010 Ohio Governor's Race

General Election

Ohio's chief executive plays a critical role in the direction the state will take on issues that affect the state’s economic outlook and the quality of life of each and every one of its citizens.   The Governor proposes the state’s budget to the legislature, and appoints the men and women who lead the state agencies that impact our families, businesses, schools, health and environment.  The policy direction set by the Governor will have a daily impact on every Ohio citizen for the next four years.

The race for Ohio's Governor also promises to garner as much national attention, and could have as much national importance, as the state's U.S. Senate seat. With first term incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland dealing with a state budget deficit and the highest state unemployment in decades, he is now facing steadily dropping approval ratings.

On January 19, 2010, Governor Strickland announced his re-election campaign with running mate, Yvette McGee Brown, former common please court judge from the central Ohio community.

Strickland will face opposition from Republican John Kasich, who announced his candidacy on June 1, 2009. On January 14, 2010, Kasich announced his running mate, Auditor of State Mary Taylor via his twitter account. Also in January, Ken Matesz announced his campaign as the Libertarian candidate with running mate, Margaret Ann Leech.

National Republicans view Ohio as one of the states where they have a good chance of taking back the governorship. Democrats, likewise, acknowledge the importance of holding onto the top executive office in a year when incumbents are under scrunity for failure to bring the country out of a recession. Many political observers expect the race to be hard-fought in part because of the importance Ohio plays in the national political landscape.
